Two years ago, BASF invested 150 million U.S. dollars in its Ludwigshafen production base to build a device with an annual capacity of 30,000 tons that can flexibly produce cyclopentanone and cyclododecanone, providing 48 jobs.
Cyclopentanone is used as an intermediate, mainly for the production of pharmaceutical chemicals, perfumes, and plant protection products, and cyclododecanone is used for the production of polyamide 12 engineering plastics. Harald Schwager, BASF’s board director and head of European production base operations, said that although the current economic environment is still relatively difficult, BASF still chooses to put the device into production, mainly because it is optimistic about the long-term development prospects of this business.
It is reported that BASF's device uses the latest three-stage process to produce cyclopentanone and cyclododecanone from nitrous oxide and other products produced at the Ludwigshafen base. Nitrous oxide is a greenhouse gas and is a by-product of another BASF installation at this site. This is the first time that it has been used in the oxidation of industrial scale plants.
