Since 2004, Foton Motor has successively established professional R&D and design centers for new energy vehicle technology centers, key laboratories for energy conservation and emission reduction, and began to increase investment in new energy vehicles. In 2009, Foton Motor launched the “Fukuda pure electric vehicle new energy vehicle R&D and industrialization†project. At the same time, Beijing Automotive New Energy Battery Technology Co., Ltd. was set up jointly with Beijing Automotive, Peking University Science and Technology Company, and Dongguan New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. to establish China's largest vehicle power lithium battery system R&D and production base. In recent years, considerable achievements have also been achieved. As of the end of last year, Foton Motors has cumulatively sold nearly 2,000 new energy vehicles, covering hybrid buses, pure electric buses, pure electric sanitation vehicles, and pure electric taxis. And it has already entered the Taiwan market. According to media reports, in March this year, Foton sold 186 new energy energy buses in Taiwan.
As early as May of this year, Foton Motors signed 1,060 units of Foton's pure electric sanitation product procurement contracts with three companies, although Fukuda has already made considerable gains in sales of new energy vehicles. Due to the historical reasons of the domestic R&D model, China’s new energy sources Vehicle companies in the automotive industry often lack research and development of core technologies, while Europe and the United States start earlier in the field of new energy buses. Companies represented by Eaton have a relatively mature new energy vehicle platform, which has led to the majority of new energy sources. Bus models are based on the original traditional models directly installed on the outsourcing of the new energy power system, the host plant only has the ability to complete the vehicle assembly, do not master the core technology.
In 2008, Futian Automobile sold 30 diesel-electric hybrid systems to Guangzhou FAW Bus Company, applying Eaton’s technology. For companies such as Futian, which are well-known in the traditional automotive industry for mastering the industrial chain and are interested in becoming the leader in new energy vehicles, mastering core technologies and opening the industrial chain are the inevitable choices for the development of new energy vehicles. At present, the company has initially established a complete industrial chain from batteries and transmission systems to complete vehicles, but it still needs breakthrough in key technologies.
At the beginning of this year, although the production and sales volume of the medium- and heavy-duty trucks maintained growth momentum at the beginning of this year, due to policy adjustments and related government purchase orders issued by local governments, Foton Motors has seen declines in light trucks, light passengers, and large and medium passengers. In the future development, Foton Motor will focus on building new energy vehicles.
