Space data highway development in Europe: 1.8 gigabits per second

According to foreign media reports, EDRS-A was the first relay satellite of the EDRS space data highway project and was launched on January 30, 2016, successfully sending the first image taken by Sentry 1A satellite. The image captured the island of Reunion and its coastal areas and was successfully received by the German Airbus Defense and Space Mission Center (MOC) in about 1 minute. The orbital test procedures conducted by Airbus and space engineers are nominally running and confirm that service operations will begin in July 2016. The space data highway system will provide high-speed laser communications in space at up to 1.8 gigabits per second.

The Copernican Sentinel and Sentinel Satellites, as well as the European Earth Observation Project, are equipped with laser communications terminals that will significantly speed up the transmission of real-time data and large volumes of data to the center of the Earth.

This major project, costing almost 500 million euros, is the result of the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus Private Equity Joint Venture (PPP). Thanks to the laser technology developed by Spacecom Defense and Space Branch - SpaceSpacecom, the space data highway will be able to transmit high-capacity (high-volume) traffic through Earth observation satellites, drones and surveillance aircraft and even a space station such as the International Space Station information. Due to the extremely high laser communication rates and geostationary orbit positioning of relay satellites (up to 50 terabytes per day), images can be transmitted to the Earth in near real time. The European Commission will be the first customer of the space data highway system.

The Copernican Sentinel and Sentinel Satellites, as well as the European Earth Observation Project, are equipped with laser communications terminals that will significantly speed up the transmission of real-time data and large volumes of data to the center of the Earth. In the case of crisis or natural disaster management, up-to-date information is of the utmost importance to the authorities because of the most appropriate emergency preparedness. Evert Dudok, head of CIS, said the space data highway is no longer a science fiction. It will revolutionize satellite communications and will be at the forefront of the European aerospace industry in technology and innovation services.

Magali Vaissiere said that with today's first session, EDRS could be almost operational to provide the European Commission with the Copernican Sentinel satellite service. The first communication node of the spatial data highway system is located at 9 degrees east longitude and will be able to establish a laser link with orbiting observation satellites. UAVs are located in the eastern and eastern coasts of Europe, Africa, Latin America and North America. The second satellite, to be launched in 2017, will expand the system's coverage, capacity and redundancy.

Airbus Defense and Space and ESA are seeking partnerships to further expand the space data highway program by 2020, one-third of which will be located in the Asia Pacific region. For example, the Pacific Rim has seen a dramatic increase in the demand for aeronautical mission communications.
